Poem of the Month, May 2014: Working Child

Today is Labor Day and we chose Maria Cristina Azcona’s “Working Child” as the Poem of the Month. Azcona is the Director of IFLAC Latin America.

    WORKING CHILD

    By Maria Cristina Azcona

    On this Labor Day
Let us think about working children

“Today is an awesome, beautiful Sunday,”
    the morning paper says
For him who is still a child
    This expression is so untrue!

The boy’s father forces him with harsh voice
to sell flowers on the corner of the street
His mother is gone, to flee from the horrendous pain
    That made her life unbearable

“Please give me a coin,” the boy begs
“Buy me just one flower, be kind,”
    And he adds a lie
“It is not for my father’s wine!”

    But people walk away imperturbable
    without caring that this boy
is a poor hard working child
    On a beautiful Sunday
