Poem of the Month, September 2011

    By Ada Aharoni

    Fanatic suicide bombers
Burning in the furnaces of hatred
Exploding deathly venom under the sun
    Murdering innocent passengers
    Assassinating the Twin Towers
    Choking the Pentagon –
    All on September 11

Did you think in your demented minds
That you could destroy modern civilization?
That you could murder not only thousands of
Defenseless people but also this grand lady
    The Statue of Liberty herself?
If so, you failed, for liberty lives –
    And you are wiped out

She lives in the creations of poets
In the rainbow songs of children
    In fascinating stories and legends
In art, monuments, and joyful dances,
    In our powerful culture satellites
    And creative Internet sites –
Freedom and joy of life lives
    While you are wiped out

Our love of life and of humanity
Are fountains that flow in the blood of all nations
    Despite your monstrous machinations.
One day soon, just as poets predicted,
Terror and war will come to an end
Not only because of our humanity
But because of war’s growing nuclear absurdity –
And you with your culture of death
    will be completely wiped out

Our global village beyond war and terror
    Will soon become a reality
And we will banish your inhuman spirits
Raging in the evil furnaces of the night
Right out of our blue planet
    And peaceful human skies –
And you with your burning hatred will be
    Wiped out forever.

    1. Ada Aharoni says:

This poem is very timely, posted on September 11, and reminding us of the horror that happened on this date ten years ago. I want to warmly thank our web editor, Solveig Hansen, for kindly suggesting to publish my poem today. Ada Aharoni
